This was a sophisticated show.  Both Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake are expert performers, and their skill was evident, both in the complexity of the sketches, and in their performance. Also worth noting is that -- unusual for SNL -- both the "host" AND the "musical guest" were in many sketches; in fact, they were in many sketches together.  In one sketch Justin played Jimmy.  Jimmy's good at physical comedy and impressions, as well as just being there and being comfortable in the sketches. There were many celebrity visitors, including Madonna, Paul McCartney, and Mayor Bloomberg.


COLD OPEN --  Justin (joined by Jimmy) reprised the street performer interfering with a lame charity worker.  Appropriately they were gift (w)rapping.

MONOLOG -- Jimmy did a skilled impersonation of Bob Dylan.  His impersonation of Paul McCartney was interrupted by the real thing. Jimmy sang well.  It's always impressive when an SNL cast member (or non-singer host) can duet with a major musician.

FAMILY FEUD -- An amusing sketch, but too long.  The density of laughs (jokes per minute) was too low. Jimmy Fallon does a real good Big Bang.

HOME FOR CHRISTMAS (WITH THE BOYFRIEND) -- One of the best sketches of the night! (aka DO IT ON MY TWINBED).

PROMOS (real) -- Drake (actor & Grammy winning rapper) will be Host & Musical Guest on Jan 18. Golden Globes, hosted by SNL alums Tina Fey & Amy Poehler will be Jan 12.

BARRY GIBB TALK SHOW -- Jimmy & Justin do great work together. Physical comedy too. They do a great "Gibbs". Madonna (real) and Barry Gibb (real) show up!

MUSICAL SEGMENT -- The first music set had a great look and a good sound, but as is so often the case with the SNL mix, the words were mostly incomprehensible. In fact, ironically, about the only lyrics from the song that I understood were, "I can't hear a word you say." (I found the music and lyrics of the second set boring.)

WEEKEND UPDATE -- Good jokes, especially the translation of what your dog is saying.  BILLY JEAN KING was fine.  PEOPLE WITH NEW JOBS (Mayor Bloomberg (real), leaving office; Jimmy Fallon (real)  taking over the Tonight show; and Seth Meyers (real) replacing Jimmy Fallon on Late Night) was fine.

WAKING UP WITH KIMYE -- A stupid sketch about a stupid person. (Note to SNL: For stupid to be funny it has to be really really smart.)

NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS -- (Fake) promos for a (fake) album of Christmas songs.  Funny moments. Some impersonations were on the mark, some were funny, some were too short to click.

CHRISTMAS PAST -- Scrooge learns what his real problem was.  I re-watched this sketch a few times and liked it more and more each time I watched it.

BABY ITS COLD OUTSIDE -- A nice, modern, romantic, musical sketch.  But it pulled its punches. It could have been a classic if (after the 12 minutes) it had been sexier, more explicit, with less clothes, and ended with the kiss it looked like they were going for.

All in all a good, funny, sophisticated show that provided a nice promo intro for Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show future.
