The 42nd edition of Dance on Camera takes place January 31-February 4. The dance-centric film festival returns to the Film Society for the 18th consecutive year with a world-class array of international dance films, including many world and US premieres.

This year’s diverse lineup also includes a Spotlight on Ice with the New York premiere of Keri Pickett’s lively documentary THE FABULOUS ICE AGE about the glamorous age of big-scale ice spectaculars and a return engagement of ICE THEATRE OF NY with a brand new program featuring appearances by ice skating legends JoJo Starbuck and Dorothy Hamill, as well as ballet maestro Edward Villella with a premiere of his new ice dance “Reveries.”

The festival is also hosting the official NY premiere of Fabrice Herrault’s poetic homage to ballet idol Rudolf Nureyev on the 20th anniversary of his death,

Kersti Grunditz’ THE MAN BEHIND THE THRONE puts the spotlight on the dance world’s best-kept secret, Vincent Paterson who has worked largely behind-the-scenes for Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bjork and more.

3D filmmaking and dance were made for each other, sharing the element of space.  3D technology heightens the depth and detail of space, in it the dancers’ movements acquire sculptural volume, with new cutting edge technology, as seen in Jedediah Wheeler’s, STORY  / TIME 3D.

Many of the films in this year’s selections reflect dance’s new perspective – a trend toward imaginative collaborations (dance and skating, dance and horses, dance and circus), as well as a recognition that dance thrives best in the bosom of a creative community.

While some films present individual artists in all their glory -- such as Rudolf Nureyev, classical Indian dancer Malavika Sarukkai, choreographic genius Paul Taylor, arts administrator Martha Hill, and theater/dance guru Bill T. Jones -- there is also a concentration of artistic endeavors that focus on the idea of group effort and its importance in today’s divided world. So prevalent is this theme that Dance on Camera is presenting an entire program devoted to the idea of community:  Artists of various stripes connecting to create work that illuminates and inspires.

For me, personally, I am especially interested in the showcase of Joanna Mendl Shaw’s Equus Projects (Dancing with Horses) in the film HASTDANS pa HOVDALA that brings dancers and horses into a creative union. And I am very interested in the use of 3D to archive dances. Indeed, when I interviewed Isabelle Fokine, who has been restoring her grandfather, Michel Fokine’s classic ballets, I urged her to archive them with 3D video.  I hope she will be moving to do that.

FILM DESCRIPTIONS & SCHEDULE

OPENING NIGHT
WORLD PREMIERE
MISS HILL: MAKING DANCE MATTER (2014) 80m
Director: Greg Vander Veer
Country: USA
Miss Hill: Making Dance Matter tells the inspiring and largely unknown story of a woman whose life was defined by her love for dance. Martha Hill emerges as dance's secret weapon, someone who fought against great odds to establish dance as a legitimate art form in America. Through archival footage, lively interviews with friends and intimates, and rare footage of the spirited subject, the film explores Hills's arduous path from a Bible Belt childhood in Ohio to the halls of academe at NYU and Bennington College to a position of power and influence as Juilliard's founding director of dance (1952-1985).  Peppered with anecdotal material delivered by dance notables who knew her, this revelatory story depicts her struggles and successes, including the battle royal that accompanied her move to the Lincoln Center campus.
DIRECTOR GREG VANDER VEER AND ADDITIONAL PANELISTS WILL ATTEND THE SCREENING.

CLOSING NIGHT
WORLD PREMIERE
PAUL TAYLOR: CREATIVE DOMAIN (2013) 82m
Director: Kate Geis
Country: USA
Paul Taylor is one of the dance world's most elusive and admired choreographers. For over 50 years, he has only given glimpses into his creative process, but for his 133rd dance, THREE DUBIOUS MEMORIES, he opens the door and allows the filmmaker into his creative process. The dance he is choreographing is a Rashomon-like exploration of memory, three characters entangled in a relationship, each believing only in his own dark memory of it.  The dominant voice in the documentary is Taylor's, and it is alternately soothing, demanding and amused. Between the guarded and unguarded moments, the viewer is witness to a mysterious work ethic that has created some of the most iconic modern dances of our time.
DIRECTOR KATE GEIS AND DANCERS FEATURED IN THE FILM WILL ATTEND THE SCREENING.
Tuesday, February 4, 9:00pm

ALL THIS CAN HAPPEN (2012) 50m

Juxtapositions, different speeds and split frame techniques convey the walker’s state of mind as he encounters a world of hilarity, despair and ceaseless variety.  Hinton is an award winning director who has worked with some of the best known names in contemporary dance, including DV8 Physical Theatre, Siobhan Davies, and Russell Maliphant.

Director Toa Fraser brings The Royal New Zealand Ballet to the big screen, capturing their acclaimed production of the ballet classic GISELLE.  Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobberg have re-staged the production (after Petipa) with an eye toward the inherent drama of the tragic romance. The two-act ballet has been reimagined by Fraser who interweaves the filmed stage performance with behind the scenes moments that hint at a romance between the dancers.  ABT principal Gillian Murphy and RNZ’s Qi Huan perform the doomed lovers with impressive conviction and the second act captures the haunting essence of this enduring masterpiece.

Director: Kersti Grunditz

Until now, Vincent Paterson has remained the dance world's best kept secret, avoiding the spotlight and concentrating on the work itself. So it may come as a surprise to learn that he is, as the film's title suggests, the Man behind the careers of superstars Michael Jackson and Madonna, in fact, the inventor of some of their defining dance moves, as well as the choreographer who created the ensemble dance numbers for Bjork and dancers in Lars von Trier's cult classic, Dancer in the Dark.  Through previously unseen rehearsal footage from Paterson's own private collection and iconic films clips that made history (Smooth Criminal, Blonde Ambition and more), the film looks at the private Vincent. From his family oriented Catholic boyhood in suburban Pennsylvania to the glamour factory of Hollywood and the heady experience of choreographing for Cirque de Soleil's Viva Elvis!, this is a personal and professional journey to be savored.

SNL -- JAN 25, 2014 -- HOST: JONAH HILL with musical guest BASTILLE

-- SNL --
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
JAN 25, 2014

HOST: JONAH HILL

with musical guest

BASTILLE

http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/

Jonah Hill is a young* movie star, known originally for comic roles in Superbad (2007), Knocked Up (2007), Funny People (2009), and Get Him to the Greek (2010). For two of his recent (not-comic) roles, in Moneyball and The Wolf of Wall Street, he was nominated for Academy Awards. He is a long shot, but the latest nomination, for his role in The Wolf Of Wall Street, will be decided at the Award ceremony on March 2, 2014.

*He's actually not as young as he looks. Jonah Hill Feldstein (his actual name) was born on December 20, 1983, making him 30 years old.

Bastille is a 3 year old up-coming English rock band, with lead singer Dan Smith. (Note: there is no direct connection between the band and the French prison where the French Revolution (more or less) started. However, Dan Smith's birthday is on Bastille Day, July 21.)

RECAP ...

This was -- almost up until the end -- a terrific show. Jonah Hill was extremely good, and game for even the worst self-flagellating humor.  The sketches were written with sophistication and wit.

Up until the last two skits, just about everything was a highlight.

COLD OPEN -- Answering the threat of Putin's crackdown on gays, the US is preparing a Team B of heterosexual figure skaters.  The first two incompetent male skaters were funny. Helped off the ice the commentator remarks "an impressive finish for the Californian."  The heterosexual mixed pair was hilarious.

MONOLOG -- After interruptions to his monolog with questions about Leo DiCaprio, Jonah stopped taking questions and started acting like a bigshot, started telling the "inside story."  Leo (the real Leo) then appeared to set him straight.

Note 1 -- Jonah looked great!
Note 2 -- Leo looked even better!
Note 3 -- This was followed by at least two commercials during the show for "Wolf of Wall Street"

BENIHANA -- Adam, at 6 years old, telling Borsht Belt jokes to everyone at the table.  Some of the jokes were actually funny, but I suspect Jonah is one of the few actors in the world that could have pulled off this sketch and made it work. Adam (after each crude remark): "I'm joking. I'm six."

THE HIT -- A classic.  Three hit men in a car, waiting for the moment, start admiring the falling snow and the cute little animal in the road.

Promos (real)
-- Melissa McCarthy w/ Imagine Dragons on SNL Feb 1.
-- Sochi Olympics coverage starts Feb 6.
-- Jimmy Fallon takes over the Tonight Show Feb 17.
-- Alan Cumming and Michelle Williams to do Cabaret beginning March 21.
-- Seth Meyers takes over Late Night on Feb 24
-- Aladdin previews begin Feb 26..
Promo (strange)
-- Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Pivot TV

COUPLES QUIZ -- The ultimate in Potty Humor.

MUSIC -- Bastille.  I like their sound, the first song especially.

WEEKEND UPDATE -- Several of the jokes were hilarious. FRANK MEDINA (the officer who arrested Bieber) was amusing. OLYA POVLATSKY was funny but unnecessarily nasty in her anti-Russian rants.

S.WEETLAND RANCH -- People who love horses, even if the horses don't love them back. (I love the n.ame of the ranch.)

ME -- Another classic.  A parody of HER, with Jonah's own voice talking to Jonah as the OS.

DINNER AT THE BOSS's TABLE -- Jonah self-flagellates (as he did in COUPLES QUIZ), here with a different kind of pottly humor.  An unusually sharp ending.

Alas... this last was the last excellent sketch.

INSIDE SoCal -- Another real-time webcast or TVcast (or something).  Like SNL has done since at least the 1920's. This time, no jokes, no humor, no point.

PORN STARS ADVERTISING THE LAMBERGHINI -- Not a good sketch to end the show (I always hope the last sketch will be the most perverse funny classic),  But it did have one funny line, "...available in manual or autoerotic, with financing as low as HPV."

I enjoyed this show.  The writing was great in the best sketches, and there were a lot of great sketches.  Also, I like that SNL is using interesting backgrounds for the music much more than it used to. Jonah is really a terrific comic actor: he nailed every one of his sketches.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE

  SNL -- JAN 18, 2014

HOST

DRAKE

with Musical Guest

DRAKE

http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/

Drake (Aubrey Drake Graham) is a 27 year old (October 24, 1986) rapper, song-writer, actor, and record producer from Canada.

He first gained fame as an actor on Canada's TV series about students at The Digrassi Community School. He plays "Soul Brother" on Anchorman 2.

He's had 10 number one singles on Billboard's charts, and his albums have sold more than 5 million copies. He has won Grammy's, Juno's & BET's  awards.

He's up for some Grammy's this year, too. (CBS on Sun  Jan 26 at 8PM).

RECAP...

This was an amusing, but kind of laid back, not terribly energetic show.  It went by quickly and there were few really bad sketches, but many of the bits seemed like they could have been developed into funnier, sharper scenes.  There was little political or edgy humor -- what SNL seems to do best.

The music was good, and the sound  and look of the music was unusual for SNL: the words were at the top of the mix, and the lighting was terrific on the singer-s; (Drake was joined by a 'friend'); while the music was softer and the musicians completely off screen.

The newest cast member made a fine debut.

Probably the best of the night was A-Rod in the COLD OPEN, and the RESOLUTION video.

SCENES...

COLD OPEN - Piers Morgan with Christie, A-Rod (suing the dictionary), & Bieber (suing the eggs).

MONOLOG - I'm from Toronto, where the rappers are polite and the Mayor smokes crack.  But the Bar Mitzvah bit (Drake has a Jewish mother and a black dad) was lame.

BET - Rappers before they were stars.

NANCY GRACE - Legal pot... "What about the babies! ... checkmate!" (... and he was only half as crazy as yaw ass...)

RESOLUTION - Revolution...  I'll do it next year... Nice video.

SLUMBER PARTY - Interesting funny idea but the sketch didn't really work too well.

MUSIC - Interesting, different kind of rap. Nice look.

AD (real) - Interesting something(?) for Beatspills.com

WEEKEND UPDATE - Jokes and Jacqueline Bisset were funny, Arianna Huffington not so much.

AD (real) - Good ad for the new Kindle.

INDIANA JONES DISNEY WORLD SPECTACULAR - ???  This sketch needed some serious script work.

DETENTION - Poetry in  detention. Pretty good (tho' not terribly funny) sketch.

PROMOS - Anchors live on air, dead off.  Sketch is amusing but under-written.

I KNOW - I don't know the point of this (morality?) sketch video. Under-written and not funny.

Drake makes a good Host, but he needs to be backed by a strong, funny director and sharp writing to get the full value of his talents.
