Jonah Hill is a young* movie star, known originally for comic roles in Superbad (2007), Knocked Up (2007), Funny People (2009), and Get Him to the Greek (2010). For two of his recent (not-comic) roles, in Moneyball and The Wolf of Wall Street, he was nominated for Academy Awards. He is a long shot, but the latest nomination, for his role in The Wolf Of Wall Street, will be decided at the Award ceremony on March 2, 2014.

 *He's actually not as young as he looks. Jonah Hill Feldstein (his actual name) was born on December 20, 1983, making him 30 years old.

Bastille is a 3 year old up-coming English rock band, with lead singer Dan Smith. (Note: there is no direct connection between the band and the French prison where the French Revolution (more or less) started. However, Dan Smith's birthday is on Bastille Day, July 21.)

RECAP ...

 This was -- almost up until the end -- a terrific show. Jonah Hill was extremely good, and game for even the worst self-flagellating humor.  The sketches were written with sophistication and wit.

 Up until the last two skits, just about everything was a highlight.

 COLD OPEN -- Answering the threat of Putin's crackdown on gays, the US is preparing a Team B of heterosexual figure skaters.  The first two incompetent male skaters were funny. Helped off the ice the commentator remarks "an impressive finish for the Californian."  The heterosexual mixed pair was hilarious.

MONOLOG -- After interruptions to his monolog with questions about Leo DiCaprio, Jonah stopped taking questions and started acting like a bigshot, started telling the "inside story."  Leo (the real Leo) then appeared to set him straight.

Note 2 -- Leo looked even better!
Note 3 -- This was followed by at least two commercials during the show for "Wolf of Wall Street"

 BENIHANA -- Adam, at 6 years old, telling Borsht Belt jokes to everyone at the table.  Some of the jokes were actually funny, but I suspect Jonah is one of the few actors in the world that could have pulled off this sketch and made it work. Adam (after each crude remark): "I'm joking. I'm six."

THE HIT -- A classic.  Three hit men in a car, waiting for the moment, start admiring the falling snow and the cute little animal in the road.

COUPLES QUIZ -- The ultimate in Potty Humor.

MUSIC -- Bastille.  I like their sound, the first song especially. 

WEEKEND UPDATE -- Several of the jokes were hilarious. FRANK MEDINA (the officer who arrested Bieber) was amusing. OLYA POVLATSKY was funny but unnecessarily nasty in her anti-Russian rants.

S.WEETLAND RANCH -- People who love horses, even if the horses don't love them back. (I love the n.ame of the ranch.)

 ME -- Another classic.  A parody of HER, with Jonah's own voice talking to Jonah as the OS.

DINNER AT THE BOSS's TABLE -- Jonah self-flagellates (as he did in COUPLES QUIZ), here with a different kind of pottly humor.  An unusually sharp ending.

Alas... this last was the last excellent sketch.

INSIDE SoCal -- Another real-time webcast or TVcast (or something).  Like SNL has done since at least the 1920's. This time, no jokes, no humor, no point.

PORN STARS ADVERTISING THE LAMBERGHINI -- Not a good sketch to end the show (I always hope the last sketch will be the most perverse funny classic),  But it did have one funny line, "...available in manual or autoerotic, with financing as low as HPV."


I enjoyed this show.  The writing was great in the best sketches, and there were a lot of great sketches.  Also, I like that SNL is using interesting backgrounds for the music much more than it used to. Jonah is really a terrific comic actor: he nailed every one of his sketches.
